How Many Shares Should You Issue in Age of Steam?
August 29, 2026
The share decision is where most new players stall, because it asks you to budget the whole round in one move. The good news: the math is simple, and the data points one way.

The real price of a share
A share is a contract: $5 now, $1 every turn, 3 VP at the end. Issued on turn 1 of an 8-turn game, it costs $8 in expenses alone — cash-negative before points. The only reason to issue is that turn-1 dollars become track, and track earns income every turn after. A share pays off exactly when the track it funds out-earns its costs over the remaining turns.
So how many on turn 1?
Budgeting Rust Belt with 4 players:
- Starting cash: $10.
- Turn-1 goal: 1–2 deliverable links. Plain terrain is about $2 per tile, so roughly $8–12.
- Auction reserve: $0–4.
- End-of-turn expenses: shares + engine = $3 if you issue 2.
That totals $15–19, and $10 + 2 shares ($10) = $20 covers it exactly. The 64% is not a convention — it is this arithmetic. Start near rivers or mountains and 3 is the number; with a short, certain route, 2.
The measured distribution
| Turn-1 shares | Games | Share |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | 3 | 1% |
| 1 | 24 | 10% |
| 2 | 153 | 64% |
| 3 | 58 | 24% |
| 4+ | 1 | 0% |
Turn-1 issues across 239 completed games. These are finishers — read it as "the people who issued like this made it to the end".
Issuing after turn 1
Over a whole game players issue an average of 9.6 additional shares beyond the starting two (246 games measured; the cap is 15). A mid-game share is worth it only if the track it funds out-earns $1 × remaining turns + 3 VP. That test gets harder every turn, and shares in the last two turns almost never pass it.
How to issue less
- Deliver first. Every income step is next-turn cash you did not have to borrow.
- Respect the auction. Auction money never becomes track. The first drop is free.
- No orphan track. Track that loses ownership is money burned. Build only what you can extend next turn.
All figures in this article are measured from completed games on this site (246 completed games through August 2026, operator accounts excluded). They describe play on this implementation, not tournament play with the physical game.
